Expedia price dropped after you booked

What to do depends on what you booked. For a hotel, book the same room again on Expedia at the lower price with free cancellation, wait for the confirmation, then cancel the old reservation.

For a flight, Expedia issued the ticket, so Expedia has to reprice it. Ask an Expedia agent to reprice the same flights; the difference comes back as a credit with the airline.

Steps checked against Expedia’s own help pages on October 22, 2026.

The steps

A hotel booked on Expedia

Book the lower rate on Expedia, then cancel the old reservation.

  1. 1
Book the same room at the new priceSign in first, or use the Expedia app, so you see member prices. Same dates, same room, a rate with free cancellation, at the lower price.
  2. 2
Wait for the new confirmation emailCheck that it shows free cancellation.
  3. 3
Cancel the old reservationIn Trips, open the itinerary and choose Change or cancel. Check the summary shows no fee before you confirm. Booked without signing in? Use Find your itinerary on Expedia with the itinerary number from your confirmation email.

Good to know

  • If you paid with OneKeyCash, it goes back to your account when you cancel, unless it has expired.

A flight booked on Expedia

Expedia issued this ticket, so ask Expedia to reprice the same flights. The difference comes back as a credit with the airline.

  1. 1
Reach ExpediaIn the Expedia app or at expedia.com/trips, open this flight and choose Help to chat, then ask for an agent. Have your confirmation number and the airline’s own code ready.
  2. 2
Ask for a repricing“The price of my flights went down. Please reprice my ticket to today’s lower fare on the exact same flights, same dates and same times. I don’t want to change anything. Please give me the difference as an airline credit.” Keep the flights; don’t cancel anything.
  3. 3
Check the creditLook under Credits in your Expedia account, or ask the agent where it will show. It is in each traveler’s name.
What you get back

An airline credit for the difference, per passenger, for flights on the same airline, before the airline’s expiry date.

If they push back, ask for a supervisor or try again later. Airlines charge no change fee on Main Cabin and above, and Expedia handles changes to tickets it sold.

Good to know

  • If you bought Expedia’s Price Drop Protection for this flight, leave the booking alone. Expedia pays drops after your trip, and a change can cancel that.
  • Ask whether there is any fee before the agent reissues the ticket.
  • The difference usually comes back as airline credit, not cash. Check the expiry date on it; most last about a year.
  • Repricing can lower the status credit you earn on this trip, because some airlines count what you paid.
  • Basic fares can’t be changed for a lower price, so Tuur doesn’t alert on them.

Four rules that keep you safe

  • Book the new room first and see its confirmation before you cancel anything. If the lower price disappears while you switch, you still have your room.
  • Same hotel, same dates, same room type, beds and meals. A different room is a different price.
  • Never swap a booking with free cancellation for a prepaid, non-refundable one.
  • Leave yourself time. Switch well before the free-cancellation deadline, not the night before.

Questions

Do I lose anything by cancelling the old hotel booking?

Not if it has free cancellation and you cancel before the deadline. Check the summary shows no fee before you confirm. OneKeyCash you paid with goes back to your account unless it has expired.

Why book the new hotel room first?

So you are never left without a room if the lower price disappears while you switch.

Can I ask the airline instead of Expedia?

Usually not. Expedia handles changes to tickets it sold. A few airlines, such as Frontier, make their own changes.

Will Expedia match a lower price on my hotel?

Not any more. Expedia and Hotels.com ended their Hotel Price Guarantee on July 28, 2026. Rebooking at the lower price is the way to get it.
