American Airlines price dropped after you booked

American doesn’t charge a change fee on Main Cabin and above, so if the price of your exact flights goes down, you can ask American to reprice your ticket and give you the difference as a Trip Credit. Your flights stay the same.

American’s conditions of carriage ban automated re-shopping, where software rebooks a ticket to catch a lower fare. Asking yourself is fine. That is why Tuur never touches an American booking: it tells you, and you ask.

Steps checked against American Airlines’s own help pages on October 22, 2026.

The steps

Ask American to reprice your same flights. The difference comes back as a Trip Credit.

  1. 1
Reach AmericanChat in the American app, or call 800-433-7300. Have your confirmation number ready. American may charge $50 when a phone agent makes the change, so ask first.
  2. 2
Ask for a repricing“The price of my flights went down. Please reprice my ticket to today’s lower fare on the exact same flights, same dates and same times. I don’t want to change anything. Please give me the difference as a Trip Credit.” Keep the flights; don’t cancel anything.
  3. 3
Find the creditAmerican emails the Trip Credit. It also shows under Travel credit in your AAdvantage account. Note the expiry date on it.
What you get back

A Trip Credit for the difference, per passenger.

If they push back, ask for a supervisor or try again later. Some people can do it themselves at aa.com: Manage trips, Change trip, and pick the same flights; a negative amount is your credit. If the site won’t show your same flights, stick with chat or the phone.

Good to know

  • The difference usually comes back as airline credit, not cash. Check the expiry date on it; most last about a year.
  • Repricing can lower the status credit you earn on this trip, because some airlines count what you paid.
  • Basic fares can’t be changed for a lower price, so Tuur doesn’t alert on them.

Which tickets qualify

  • Main Cabin and above.
  • Not Basic Economy. It can’t be changed, so it can’t be repriced.
  • On a refundable ticket, the difference can go back to your card instead of a Trip Credit.

Questions

Can you get money back if your American Airlines flight price drops?

Yes, as a Trip Credit, on Main Cabin and above. Ask American to reprice the same flights; the steps are above.

Does American refund the difference in cash?

Not on most tickets. The difference comes back as a Trip Credit. Refundable fares can go back to your card.

Can I do it myself on aa.com?

Sometimes. In Manage trips, choose Change trip and pick the same flights; a negative amount is your credit. If the site won’t show your same flights, use chat in the American app or call 800-433-7300. American may charge $50 when a phone agent makes the change, so ask first.

How long does a Trip Credit last?

Trip Credits issued since April 2024 last 12 months for AAdvantage members and 6 months for everyone else. The date is on the credit American emails you, and it shows under Travel credit in your AAdvantage account.
