Hilton price dropped after you booked
Travelers report that Hilton’s edit flow can confirm a change but keep the original rate, so don’t rely on a modification. Book the new rate first, signed in so it earns Hilton Honors points, then cancel the old reservation.
Skip Advance Purchase rates. They can’t be refunded, so they are never a safe swap for a flexible one.
Steps checked against Hilton’s own help pages on October 22, 2026.
The steps
Book the lower rate, then cancel the old reservation.
- 1Book the same room at the new priceSign in at hilton.com or the Hilton Honors app so the stay earns your points. Same dates, same room, a rate with free cancellation, at the lower price. Skip Advance Purchase rates; they can’t be refunded.
- 2Wait for the new confirmation email
- 3Cancel the old reservationAt hilton.com, Find Stay, then View/Edit Stay, then Cancel this reservation. Or use “Modify your reservation” in your original email.
Good to know
- If you put an upgrade reward on this stay, it won’t move to the new booking. Ask Hilton before you cancel.
Four rules that keep you safe
- Book the new room first and see its confirmation before you cancel anything. If the lower price disappears while you switch, you still have your room.
- Same hotel, same dates, same room type, beds and meals. A different room is a different price.
- Never swap a booking with free cancellation for a prepaid, non-refundable one.
- Leave yourself time. Switch well before the free-cancellation deadline, not the night before.
Skip the room-switch trick
You may read about changing the room type and then changing it back to force a new price. Don’t: between the two changes your original room or rate can sell out.
Hilton’s Price Match Guarantee doesn’t cover this
Hilton’s Price Match Guarantee covers a lower price on another site. You book with Hilton first and claim online within 24 hours. A later drop in Hilton’s own price doesn’t qualify.
Questions
Can’t I just edit my Hilton reservation to the lower rate?
Travelers report that the edit can go through but keep the original rate. Booking the new rate and cancelling the old one is the method that reliably works.
I put an upgrade reward on this stay. Is it safe?
It won’t move to the new booking. Ask Hilton before you cancel.
