IHG price dropped after you booked

IHG doesn’t re-rate a reservation in place. Book the same room at the lower flexible rate, signed in so it earns IHG One Rewards points, wait for the confirmation, then cancel the old reservation from Manage your reservation.

This covers every IHG hotel, including Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental, Kimpton and Staybridge Suites.

Steps checked against IHG’s own help pages on October 22, 2026.

The steps

Book the lower rate, then cancel the old reservation.

  1. 1
Book the same room at the new priceSign in at ihg.com or the IHG One Rewards app so the stay earns your points. Same dates, same room, a rate with free cancellation, at the lower price. Skip prepaid rates; they can’t be refunded.
  2. 2
Wait for the new confirmation email
  3. 3
Cancel the old reservationOn IHG’s Manage your reservation page with your confirmation number and last name, or signed in from your upcoming stays.

Four rules that keep you safe

  • Book the new room first and see its confirmation before you cancel anything. If the lower price disappears while you switch, you still have your room.
  • Same hotel, same dates, same room type, beds and meals. A different room is a different price.
  • Never swap a booking with free cancellation for a prepaid, non-refundable one.
  • Leave yourself time. Switch well before the free-cancellation deadline, not the night before.

Questions

How do I cancel the old IHG reservation?

On IHG’s Manage your reservation page with your confirmation number and last name, or signed in from your upcoming stays.

Should I pick a prepaid rate if it is cheaper?

No. Prepaid rates can’t be refunded, so they are never a safe swap for a flexible one.
